Goals

Welcome to the Evolutionary-Stress blog, a companion site to the Center for Adaptive Stress. Our mission is to delve deeper into the theories and practices of the biopsychosocial-nutritional model and the Evolutionary Stress Framework (ESF), providing readers with a more comprehensive understanding of health and wellness.

Throughout history, the application of evolutionary theory to medicine has sparked controversy and misunderstanding, leading to harmful practices such as eugenics and social Darwinism (more). However, we believe in the constructive potential of evolutionary theory. It can enrich our understanding of health by identifying adaptive functions and trade-offs underlying various health conditions.

Similarly, the concept of stress has been often oversimplified in medical discourse, leading to dismissal of patients’ experiences and neglect of underlying causes. Our approach to stress is different. In ESF, we view stress as an adaptive force that shapes our evolutionary history, cognitive diversity, and resilience.

In this blog, we’ll explore how health conditions can be viewed as manifestations of ecosystems in imbalance, rather than simply products of broken chemistry or poor coping skills. We use the biopsychosocial-nutritional model, an extension of the biopsychosocial model, which integrates insights from evolutionary biology, stress research, neurodiversity, and nutrition. This model transcends linear models, addressing health outcomes resulting from factors at multiple levels of organization, from molecular to social.

We advocate for a paradigm shift in healthcare: moving away from linear, reductionist approaches and embracing the complexity inherent in human health and well-being. The aim of our blog is to illuminate how this perspective informs more inclusive, adaptive, and effective strategies for healthcare, education, and societal integration.

By understanding the diverse factors contributing to health, we can foster empathy, equity, and individualized care within healthcare. Join us as we explore this new understanding of health and wellness through the lens of the Evolutionary Stress Framework on the Evolutionary-Stress blog.
