Why Stress Needs a Reframe
Most people think of stress as a variable—something to reduce, manage, or avoid. It’s often framed as a background factor that disrupts an otherwise stable system. But for me—and for many autistic and chronically ill individuals—stress isn’t background noise. It’s the terrain the whole system is moving across.
Stress doesn’t distort the system. It reveals how the system works.
And that shift in thinking changes everything—from how we understand autism to how we design care, education, and health systems.
Stress as an Organizing Principle
Stress is not just a reaction to pressure. It is the organizing logic through which systems prioritize, allocate energy, and regulate adaptation.
In stress science:
- Bruce McEwen’s allostatic load model shows that stress reshapes systems over time, not just in crisis.
- Lisa Feldman Barrett reframes the brain as an energy-budgeting organ, constantly predicting the future to conserve resources.
- Martin Picard’s work on mitochondrial signaling reveals how stress is recorded in our biology—down to the energy-generating organelles.
- Del Giudice’s Adaptive Calibration Model shows that early life stress sets the tone for lifelong sensitivity, responsivity, and resilience.
Stress is not the enemy—it’s the medium.
It’s how systems learn, adapt, recalibrate, and survive.
Energetic Intelligence: What Systems Know
From this lens, I define energetic intelligence as the capacity of a system to:
- Predict internal and external demands
- Allocate energy adaptively across systems (cognitive, emotional, immune, sensory)
- Maintain coherence across changing constraints
This is not a soft metaphor. It’s real, measurable biology. When a person loses energetic intelligence—due to trauma, overload, illness, or chronic environmental mismatch—they don’t just feel tired. They lose regulation, lose prediction, and often experience shutdown, burnout, or regression (Santamaría-García, 2024).
Autism as Emergent Adaptation
This framework changes how we understand autism—not as a disorder to be explained by a single cause, but as an emergent adaptive state.
From the Evolutionary Stress Framework, autism is not one thing. It’s the convergence of three or more bio-neurotype profiles—each shaped by different starting conditions and stress trajectories. They manifest differently but often end up under the same diagnostic umbrella due to overlapping traits that arise in response to constraint.
Autism isn’t caused. It emerges.
It is the biological signature of adaptation under complexity, load, and energetic sensitivity.
Whether it’s sensory hypersensitivity, pattern-based communication, or difficulty with transitions, these traits are not malfunctions. They are the result of systems optimizing for coherence under pressure—often in environments that don’t reflect their design.
Disorder Within Diversity: What We’re Missing
We’ve made progress in shifting the autism narrative from “disorder” to “difference.” But in doing so, we’ve sometimes avoided the complexity. We’ve assumed that celebrating neurodiversity means avoiding any discussion of dysfunction, burnout, or regression.
But difference and disorder are not opposites.
Disorder is what happens when a diverse system hits constraint—when it no longer has the energetic support to maintain coherence.
That’s why the real conversation isn’t “disorder vs. diversity.”
It’s: What does diversity look like under stress? And how do we support it?
Designing for the Terrain
If stress is the terrain, then care must be terrain-aware. You don’t eliminate stress. You design systems that support recalibration under load.
This applies to everything:
- Burnout becomes a sign of energy collapse, not personal failure.
- Shutdowns become metabolic conservation strategies.
- Meltdowns become a release valve in a system that’s reached prediction failure.
- Chronic illness becomes a multi-system recalibration in progress—not brokenness.
Health is not the absence of stress.
It’s the capacity for adaptive coherence under changing conditions.
This is the guiding principle of the Evolutionary Stress Framework:
Symptoms are not problems to suppress—they are data about the system’s needs, priorities, and adaptation strategy.
A Call to Evolve the System
We can’t keep funding the wrong frameworks and expecting better outcomes. Throwing resources at a linear, reductive model of health—one that treats stress as something to eliminate rather than understand—will only create more fragmentation, more burnout, and more misinterpretation of complex needs.
Instead, we must:
- Build complexity-informed care models that work with stress, not against it
- Shift from optimization to regulation and support
- Redefine intelligence as energetic strategy, not academic performance
- Recognize that diversity under constraint reveals the truth of the system—not its deviation
Closing: Stress Is the System’s Language
When we listen to stress as information—not just noise—we stop blaming bodies for doing what they were designed to do: survive, adapt, reorganize.
The Evolutionary Stress Framework doesn’t just reframe autism, chronic illness, and trauma. It reframes the logic of life itself.
Stress isn’t a variable.
It’s the framework.
It’s the terrain.
It’s the story the system is telling—if we know how to listen.
Let’s stop chasing causes.
Let’s start mapping constraints.
Let’s design for coherence, not compliance.
That’s how we build a world that supports real difference—not just tolerates it.
